243 posts · Joined 2017. #9 · Sep 21, 2020. It's normal to hear ticking after doing a cam install. The lifters will need to fill up with oil and the ticking will subside. Before my engine dropped a valve, I heard ticking from the lifters. After rebuilding my engine, it still ticks just as loud as before.
Install the heat shield and tighten nuts to 8 N·m (70 in. lbs.). Start from the center and move outward, like head bolts. Also while still cold, pull the valve covers and push down on each rocker to look for any that are spongy or loose. Inspect rocker for cracks, inspect any components for looseness, wear or breakage.
The "Hemi Tick" has been reported at various noise levels, and in both automatic and manual cars. It bothers some folks, others it doesn't. Some ticking is minor, some not. OP, the "bad" lifter shouldn't have gotten out of the factory that makes them, but that's mass production.
